Barrett Associates was founded in 1937 by C. Redington Barrett, former Director of Research at Charles D. Barney, a predecessor firm to Smith Barney & Co. Mr. Barrett established the firm as an independent investment advisor and, in 1970, sold majority ownership to his son John D. Barrett II, the current chairman.
To ensure continued growth, Barrett sought a strategic partner in Legg Mason, Inc. and became an affiliate of that firm in 2001.
Today, Barrett Associates is a wholly owned subsidiary of Legg Mason, Inc. As of 3/31/10 the assets under management are approximately 1.0 billion.
